A few days ago, Dan and I both noticed that the basement smelled funny. He cleaned the litterbox and the area around it, we emptied the wastebaskets and washed the dirty laundry, and the next day, it still smelled. Dan has come to the conclusion that something probably died in the wall because the ickiness seems to be coming from a particular spot. The cat has pulled at the insulation near there in the not-terribly distant past, but other than that, doesn't act strange around it. This is the exterior wall of the unfinished basement of our 1905 house. Boards of some sort are attached to the wall, but I have no idea what is behind that. Cement blocks maybe?
At the moment, we have a nearby window open and fan blowing out and that seems to contain the smell pretty well. Should we:
a) Leave it alone and hope that whatever's back there dries up and stop stinking
b) Pull apart the wall ourselves and hope it's easily found and removed
c) Call someone to do the tearing for us
d) Something else I haven't thought of
