Peter's in week 4 wearing underwear during the day and week 2 at night. He had 4 dry nights in a row so we switched to underwear, but is now wetting the bed half the time. Oh well--I'm not going back now. The switch to underwear began on a day when he told us three times that he had to pee. I figured that if he was finally going to tell us BEFORE peeing, I was going to make use of it. He then didn't tell us again for a week and put up a giant fuss before sitting on the potty half the time, but I didn't care. Over the past few days, I'm noticing some progress. He's telling us he has to poop (and what corner we should put the potty in and what book we should bring him to read) most of the time and telling us he has to pee at least half the time. We never reached the point of bribing him to use the potty, although I usually put his potty on the kitchen chairs so he can eat his cereal as he pees. After realizing that his 2T/3T Cars and Thomas underwear fit Leo, we went to Target and got the identical ones in 4T. My preferred underwear are still the Hanna Andersson trainers, but their sizing is goofy so I won't buy their non-trainers until he fits well into 100/110. He's also got some OshKosh ones we found new at a garage sale in solid colors and dinosaur print. I don't mind the characters at the moment -- if twisting around to look at Mater on his butt inspires him to remove them before peeing, I'm all for it -- but it would be nice to lose the characters at some point.
Meanwhile, I took the outgrown underwear and have been cutting up some Target prefolds I bought last summer and sewing them together to make trainers for Leo. He's outgrowing the small Firefly fitteds that comprise the bulk of his diaper stash and the mediums I kept from Peter are still too big in the thighs (since Peter stretched them) and seem like overkill since we change him every time he pees. I'm slowly changing over to using mostly wool and fleece pants with him to avoid needing diaper covers. With Peter out of diapers I can easily go two days between loads of diaper laundry (except today when both boys woke up at 6 am and Leo seemed to pee every 10 minutes all morning) again. I let Peter touch my sewing machine and now the tension's all wonky and I haven't figured out how to fix it, but hopefully between the altered undies and the Poquito pants I bought materials for and haven't finished sewing (never mind the 7 cut but not elasticized pair in my closet--I need to make the next size up now, bah), I won't have to buy too many diapers for Leo. It seems like a good fitted used to be $15-$20 but now they're running $25 and more and it's just more than I need. I'd like to have maybe half a dozen thick dipes with microfleece liners for times when I know I won't be able to change him right away, but trimmer dipes and trainers will suffice the rest of the time and dry much faster. Taking Peter's diapers out has cut at least half an hour off the drying time.
Maybe by Peter's birthday next week, I'll be able to say that accidents are rare. He's at about one a day right now (not including nights) but it seems like those are often "Mama, I have to go potty--uh oh" incidents more often now than him just ignoring the need to go. He pooped in his underwear for the first time in four or five days this afternoon, but we were at my parents' house and getting him to leave the book room is a challenge under good circumstances.
In other news, I got to go sledding and make a snowman with Peter for the first time today (I've either been pregnant or indoors with Leo before). Whee!
